Kerala may be located down south, but when it comes to being progressive, it is definitely up there right at the top. In fact, the state with the highest literacy rate in the country (a whopping 94% as per a 2011 census) is more than just serene beaches and scenic backwaters.

We are talking about the collective mentality of the people in Kerala. Sure, they are traditional in their approach, but extremely modern in their thinking.

Continuing with this progressive way of thought, a Gender-Neutral Football League (GNFL) is being organized by a group of youngsters in the state.

We love how these motivated youngsters, who are a part of Yuvasamithi (an informal group attached to Kerala's premier People's Science Movement) have not only made the most of a super-popular sport, but have also challenged the norms in a bid to bring about a positive change in the society.

In fact, we were extremely touched by the genuineness of intention behind this league.

We know that football is one of the most followed sports in Kerala, and that the state has been a birth place for several national-level players. But here, even the local tournaments enjoy a huge fan following, especially during vacation season.

So when these youngsters from Yuvasamithi noticed a male-dominated participation and viewership, they decided to come up with a football league for men, women, and transgender people as a part of their SCRIBES fest (a science-cultural fest featuring film screenings, performances, and important discussions for the state's youth).

According to The Better India, district-level matches of this football league are scheduled for February. The final rounds will be played in the same month at Malappuram.

Now isn't that a beautiful thought, considering how women and transgender people are not exactly encouraged to get into sport in our society.

We hope that this model of gender neutrality inspires the youth of our country to not only be accepting of all genders--but also encourage and provide equal opportunities for all. Because you know what? Talent is genderless.
